I need to animate a curve from one point to another using Mapbox.js.
I looked through the official examples and I saw that simply drawing the line is very easy using Arc.js.
So I thought, is it possible to export points of the curve that is made with Arc.js and use them to animate a line using Mapbox.js?
Or only possible way to animate lines is coming up with formula?
Just like in movies, animation is simply a series of still images: you would take the arc generated by Arc.js, make 'frames' of sub-sections of it, and call .addData or .setGeoJSON() repeatedly, depending on whether you're using L.geoJson or L.mapbox.featureLayer. You would do this on a setInterval or setTimeout or requestAnimationFrame in order to run the calls across time.

I'm using leaflet to trace underground pipes which I create using the polyline methods.
Since the pipes/lines can sometimes overlap I need to be able to highlight the selected line which requires switching the z-index of the line.
Now it seems that leaflet does offer a setZIndex method, but it's not available for individual layers - so I can change it over an entire featureGroup, but that is less helfpul - and making every line into its own separate featureGroup feels like an overkill.
Any suggestions?
You could create another layer with a superior z-index that would be empty at start. When the mouse is going over a feature, copy the feature into that layer. When the mouse is going out, just remove it from the layer.
It might be a little bit cpu demanding, so I suggest you to debounce the mouseover function in order to make the mouse to wait 1-2 seconds over a feature before copying it into the top layer.

I have started with GSAP, but it looks like creating something like this, is really a big task.
I have to create mostly every point/move singular and i have no idea if there is a faster/better way.
Currently i only have looked at GSAP without plugins.
Is there some special tool/(GSAP) plugin that can help to create this?
Or should i maybe use d3.js?
I also tried to find an tutorial for this, but it looks like there is nothing for this more advanced case.

The example you provided is using THREE.js and I would suggest you to use it too since you want to operate in 3D space also.
When you want to animate a large ammount of points you will need to use a vertex shader. That's because vertex shader will allow you to calculate all of the points positions in one step (thanks to parallel computing on the GPU), whereas doing it the 'normal way' (on the CPU) is very bad on performance, since every single point has to be calculated one by one. (here you can see the difference)
The way you animate the points is a little different than you might think- you don't want to apply animation to every. single. point...
Instead you will need three things that you will pass to the shader:
-array containing starting points position,
-array containing final points position,
-blend parameter (just a float variable taking values from 0 to 1).
Then you use GSAP to animate only the blend parameter, and shader does the rest (for example when the blend parameter is 0.5 the point position is exactly halfway between starting position and final position that you provided to the shader)
The example you provided is also using some kind of Perlin Noise function which you will have to implement in the shader also.

I'm new to leaflet, looking for some advice.
I'd like to create an animation of a marker of some sort (for example, an html5 filled arc or shape) to replay GPS tracks on a map. I may want several animated markers and I want to stay flexible with the behavior and performance. Can anyone recommend a good way to go about creating this type of animation?
It looks like I could create a canvas layer (L.TileLayer.Canvas) and draw on it using a technique for linear animation (e.g. http://www.html5canvastutorials.com/advanced/html5-canvas-linear-motion-animation/), but I'm not yet sure if this works, or if I need to call redraw() and how the performance would be. Or I could try and make customer markers and move them by setting the lat/lon on them at some interval.
Has anyone come across this and can recommend a solution (above ideas or other)? Ideally as I change zoom levels, the animation will "scale" and have good performance. Thanks!

yes there are a couple of ways to approach the problem...
drawing onto an interactive map is challenging because you need to recalculate your position on pan and zoom events; in addition to managing your actual animation.
This is an excellent example using the D3 library to manage the animation in a continuous loop, you may be a able to modify the code for multiple animations.

Any ideas on where to even begin with making a violin chart using d3? Does it exist already?
I've looked around and have figured out how to do it using ggplot2 and was hoping there'd be a ready-made example that I could learn from but haven't found one yet.
I suppose I could do a really painful process of making various size bars on top of each other, or taking a distribution, rotating it and mirroring it. But surely there's a better way.
I needed that for myself so here it is: violin plot
As far as I know, nobody has done this before, but it shouldn't be too hard. I would start as if I was making a line chart (or boxed instead of lines) for one half of a violin. That is, create the appropriate x and y scales and add the data in. The result of this I would rotate and translate to the correct position. Then do the same thing again and mirror it as well to get the other half of the violin.
This may sound complex, but SVG has built-in support for these operations (rotating and mirroring). You should be able to approach this pretty much like drawing a line graph of the distribution with 2-3 simple operations on top of that. Wrap everything in a function and you've got something you can call to create a violin.
It of course also depends in what form you have the data to make the plot. A line plot might not be feasible because of too few data points, but then you can easily use bars instead.
I would like to draw "moving" lines using JavaScript and Canvas. Basically, I have a bezier curve I would like to draw, but instead of drawing the curve all at once, I would like to draw pieces of the curve over time so it looks like it is growing. A better explanation might be: I would like the line to start to the origin, and then move to the destination point over time. What is the best way to achieve this?
I created a jQuery plugin called jCurvy that allows you to place elements along a bezier curve. You could use jCurvy along with the fadeIn method and a callback to do what you are talking about. Take a look at the example I setup here:
