Comparing a given value against a multi-dimensional array - javascript

I really need your help.
I'd like to structure and build an array like the below.:
var provinces = [
['Ontario','ON'],
['Quebec','QC'],
['British Columbia','BC'],
['Saskatchewan','SK']
];
then, id like to compare the value (x) against my array, ie:
var x = 'Ontario'
if (x matches the value in the array list 'provinces') { then let x = ON }
How do you write something like this in javascript?

Use the .filter() function, that receives a true/false return condition to retrieve itens from an array:
var provinces = [
['Ontario','ON'],
['Quebec','QC'],
['British Columbia','BC'],
['Saskatchewan','SK']
];
var x = "Ontario";
//Find if any array item matches the word
var result = provinces.filter(function(item) {
return item[0] == x;

How to enter a string to an array to a given position?

The condition is such that I have to enter a string to an array to a given position
such that all the pre position if not exist should be made to be empty strings.
example;
var array = []; // now I want to enter a string 'hello' at index 2
now the array should look like:
array = [ '','','hello']; //now lets say I want to enter a string 'world' at index 4
so the array should become:
array = [ '','','hello','','world'];
Is there a way to do this?
or do i have a better option to enter a string and and its position?

Something like this should do the trick. The function takes three arguments: the target array, the index (0-based) and the value. Just iterate from the finish of you array to the new position and add "" to each entry, then, after the loop, enqueue the desired string. Here's the fiddle.

First find out how many additional elements need to add ''
push these new elements to array.
push the required value at end.
PS: Assumed the index always higher than the array length. We can add conditions to cover those cases as well.

Remove duplicate index value from first array, manipulate second as per first(at some specific conditions)

please understand my scenario:
I have two array , both array will have equal length always.
I want remove duplicate value in first array and second array will be manipulated according first one.
like if i have array like :
var firstArr = [1,1,4,1,4,5]
var secArr = ['sagar', 'vilas', 'suraj', 'ganesh','more','abhi']
//I want below Output
//[1,4,5] // this is firstArr after manipulation
//['sagar|vilas|ganesh','suraj|more',abhi] // this is secArr after manipulation
// here all duplicate values will be removed from first array
// and at same index second array will be manipulated.

You can use Map and reduce
First loop through the first array and map it values as key and take the values from second array's respective index as key
Now you have loop on the map's entries take the key's will be your unique firstArr and to get desired value for second arr you need to join values by |

You first group the texts into arrays and then join them together.

How to check if any of the strings from an array with variable length are present in another string?

I am trying to filter some data from an array in a JSON file, based on an input of the form string1, string1,string2, string1,string2,string3 etc., that is, some strings separated by a ,.
What I'm trying to do:
let arrInput = document.getElementById('inputBox').val.split(',');
for(let i = 0; i < arrToFilter.length; i++){
if(.........what to write here?...........){
arrOutput.push(arrToFilter[i]);
}
}
return arrOutput;
If the arrInput had a fixed length, I could accomplish this using indexOf != -1 for each element in arrInput, but here, since the length of arrInput is variable, how can I check if at least one of the strings present in arrInput is also present as a substring in arrToFIlter[i]?

Let arrToFilter be ["abcqwer", "pizza", "definition", "abcdef", "example"]
Case 1 :
Say the input entered (in an <input> element) is abc,def.
For this, the arrOutput should be ["abcqwer", "definition", "abcdef"]
Case 2:
Say the input entered is abc
Expected output : ["abcqwer", "abcdef"]

Javascript sorting input values into an array

I have the below code which looks at hidden inputs with the class howmanyproducts.

What I am trying to achieve is for each id get the value and sort the ids into an array based on their values.
You have to add both your ids and the corresponding values to an array, then to use the sort method of your array with an adapted compare function. Let say your values are number but are retrieved as string :
// Create a new empty array :
var ids = [];
$("#proddiv .howmanyproducts").each(function() {
var id = this.id;
var val = $(this.id).val();
// Store the id and the value:
ids.push([id, +val]);
});
// Sort the array in place, using the second element of each item
// ie. the value :
ids.sort(function(a, b) { return a[1] - b[1]; });
// Once sorted, make a new array with only the ids:
var result = ids.map(function(a,b) { return a[0] });
I used the traditional syntax, but note that it can be written more simply using arrow functions:
ids.sort((a,b) => a[1] - b[1]);

What kind of array is this in JavaScript?

I have an array that looks like this:
var locationsArray = [['title1','description1','12'],['title2','description2','7'],['title3','description3','57']];
I can't figure out what type of array this is. More importantly, I'm gonna have to create one based on the info there. So, if the number on the end is greater than 10 then create a brand new array in the same exact style, but only with the title and description.
var newArray = [];
// just a guess
if(locationsArray[0,2]>10){
//add to my newArray like this : ['title1','description1'],['title3','description3']
?
}
How can I do it?

It's an array of arrays, also known as a 2-dimensional array. Each index contains its own array that has its own set of indexes.
For instance, if I retrieve locationsArray[0] I get ['title1','description1','12']. If I needed to get the title from the first array, I can access it by locationsArray[0][0] to get 'title1'.
Completing your example:
var newArray = [];
// just a guess
if(locationsArray[0][2]>10){
newArray.push( [ locationsArray[0][0], locationsArray[0][1] ] );

throw that in a loop and you're good to go.
It's an array of arrays of strings.
Each time there is this : [], it defines an array, and the content can be anything (such as another array, in your case).
So, if we take the following example :
var myArray = ["string", "string2", ["string3-1", "string3-2"]];
The values would be as such :
myArray[0] == "string"
myArray[1] == "string2"
myArray[2][0] == "string3-1"
myArray[2][1] == "string3-2"
There can be as many levels of depth as your RAM can handle.
locationsArray is an array of arrays. The first [] operator indexes into the main array (e.g. locationsArray[0] = ['title1','description1','12']) while a second [] operation indexes into the array that the first index pointed to (e.g. locationsArray[0][1] = 'description1').
Your newArray looks like it needs to be the same thing.
