I'm reaching out for some advice on the best API/code library to use to build an interactive timeline/chart. I have included an example image below. The idea would be that you have a key, and clickable elements along a path/line that pop up/out when interacted with.
I have a lot of experience with Google Maps API, but this is quite clearly something a little different. Would you suggest ChartJS? Or something else? Just trying to get some background/research.
Do let me know if posting this on SO was the wrong thing to do.
Take a look at D3J or Dojo. They are both JavaScript libraries for data-driven and data-centric front-end applications.

I am slowly losing my head in this problem.
Context: I'm fairly new to webserver, javascript etc. so my knowledge is very limited.
It seems very simple: I want to draw Features on a Website using OpenLayers and safe them for later use on a GeoServer.
I've tried mainly posting GeoJSON using the official Importer Extension for the GeoServer, but I was stuck because it does not support GeoJSON, however GeoJSON seems to be the go to format according to OpenLayers Doc.
Most importantly I want to avoid using these huge Shapefiles, which are very unhandy and unreadable.
Now I'm getting a huge overhead, because it seems like there is a simple and basic solution everyone uses, but me.
If you need any code examples of what I've done feel free, but I feel like they are not neccesary for my question.
Maybe one last thing: I am developing a prototyp for my company so it would be even better if there is a solution where I can "capsule" the website from the backend using the GeoServer REST-API for example.

I'm making a web app, the backend is made in PHP.
I need to create some kind of pdf-report for the users with charts, tables, pictures, and I need it to be decent (Quality and Style)
I don't know if the best option is a javascript library, 'cause I've found some libraries, but these make not really good looking pdfs.
So I was looking for a javascript library, but nothing seems to fit my requeriments.
I'll give you some pictures in order for you to have a better idea about what I want:

I'm really getting tired of looking and found nothing... It's been almost 2 months now, maybe more.
So my first idea was to use a javascript library that could convert html to pdf, but I was so naive and I didn't know how hard it was to convert html to pdf and without messing with the structure of the elements (The visual organization)
I first tried jsPDF by MrRio, but it doesn't support css (Something that I really need) or the charts (If the charts are pictures, it works fine, but if they are generated with a library like chartJS or highcharts it won't work).
I tried with some similar plugins but all of them had similar problems

Then I found jsreport, I did a really nice thing in their playground and it worked perfectly. The problem is it needs NodeJS and my Site is made in nodeJS, and I don't know if there is a way to use jsreport with php and if there is I'm not sure if it will work as nice as it did in their playground.
Something that I just tought about if there will be a way that use nodeJS only for this feature, I don't know it is not recommended or something, need to find more about this, idk what you guys think.

Then I tried again jsPDF but this time using it along with html2canvas and it worked almost fine, but the quality decreases a lot and the text cannot be selected or copied. I managed to increase the quality a bit, but nothing further that.
I have other ideas, something related to the print option from the browsers, but haven't found anything good.
The other idea that I don't know if it possible, it's making some kind of document like a template and then somehow add the user data inside that template, to finally have a pdf but with the users data.

So, the reason I want this feature it's because most of the clients that use my Web App, require this function. So I can't migrate my app to Node or Rails, because it will take a really long time, and I don't have that time right now, so I don't know what are my options. The solution doesn't need to be free, but if it is, it will be great, because I don't have a big budget for a really expensive plugin.

Can this be done without PHP or RAILS?

Your best bet, given that you don't want to implement a third party indexing service, would be to set an indexing function on your server's back end to handle search requests. You mentioned Rails, and there are some pretty great gems for this.
One point of trouble you will have with this question is that, in my experience, full site search functionality without a back end / database to query is not a very useful solution for any applications I've seen.
However, given that you want to keep it JS, you might look into the MEAN stack (MongoDB, Express.js, Angular.js, Node.js) which does some pretty sweet things like two-way data binding. It's a pure Javascript solution (albeit not a purely-front end solution).
Honestly, it sounds like you might be taking too big of bites to start off with. Try working through a scripting language on a site like Code Academy and learning about basic web application setups like MVC (a common way to handle different parts of a web application (used by the aforementioned Rails)). Stack Overflow users can be pretty brutal when you ask questions about advanced functionality without some understanding of the functionality's underlying elements or functional requirements, and search engines from the ground up have historically been the thing of doctoral dissertations.

I'm creating a single page javascript webapp. If I want to make an app like this:
What is an ui package that could get me closest there?
Look into Ext-JS. It should be possible to desing the above webpage using it. Although its basically javascript but involves a not-ignorable learning curve. Though nowadays, they provide an awsesome documentation and you can get many basic examples on the web.
If I am starting a new project how should I pick between using YUI 2, YUI 3 and jQuery?
I know there are a bunch of questions/answers already about can you use them together, but I am trying to figure out what criteria I should be thinking about to make my decision.
Are they overlapping?
Is one better at GUI and the other better at internals?
Do they play well together? My understanding from other questions is that they can live in different namespaces, so they can live together, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it is good to use both.

If you are familiar with neither, I personally have found jQuery's documentation and API easier to understand than YUI's, at least for simpler things. It also appears there is more jQuery related information than YUI on stackoverflow.
YUI does have its users and supporters though, so check it out in case you end up finding it suitable for you. It's got a huge library of additional modules you can use for complex web applications.
My usual advice would be to go with whatever you're familiar with, and I say this because I don't think it's worth dropping one to start learning the other from scratch. But if you are familiar with neither, then you should check out how easy the documentation for both is to understand.
PS I would not recommend YUI2 if you're starting anew as it has been superceded by YUI3, which is much better designed.
We need more information about the type and size of the project before a proper library can be suggested.
For example, if you're building a semi-complex/large-ish web app, I would suggest Dojo or ExtJs. Otherwise, for smaller projects, jQuery might be more appropriate. I cannot comment on YUI as I have not used it.
Impossible to say without knowing more details about the project. Use jQuery or Prototype for things like DOM manipulation and making autocomplete, etc. If you need a more powerful Javascript implementation take a look at ExtJS, which is basically a full stack framework for Javascript.
Both are JS frameworks and there to help you. YUI is known to be more natural in them and more closer to the original Javascript while jQuery is known as more easy and you find more jQuery users and support around then YUI. However, as said earlier, it depends on the project, if it is likely that you will be making your own custom widgets, I will suggest you to go with YUI but if it's like a simple e-commerce website in which you just need some fancy galleries and shopping cart, go with jQuery, you will learn and implement that quickly. I am not saying that you can not go more in depth with jQuery but my impression is that jQuery is more of a CakePHP for PHP like of framework which gets you off the grounds quickly.
In my opinion there is no need for you to use them side by side in a single project, that will just produce the over-head as both do whatever you want to do in them i.e creating dialog panels, autocomplete quick searches, event related utilities etc.
