I am currently working on a data-intensive web application that frequently communicates with an external API and retrieves JSONP data when returned. The script depends upon a library called head.js v1.0.3. http://headjs.com/ to accomplish this. However, I noticed that in IE 11 for some reason, the onload event for the script sometimes, but not always, fires before the script has actually loaded into the browser. The behavior is demonstrable whether using head.js or not. Alternatively, I may create a script element with the onload event set to capture the returned data. Sometimes it works, and sometimes not. Even more weird is that once it happens the first time, it seems to keep happening for the duration of the browser session.
Any ideas for a workaround?

After a little bit of research, it seems the only way around this bug is to modify the API so that once the variable holding the JSONP is initialized, the script itself triggers the callback. Unfortunately, this would not work as a solution for others if they do not have access to modify whatever API is in use, but it does solve the problem for me.

I am wondering if there is a way to execute a JavaScript function once only on the first ever page load and then not execute on any subsequent reloads.

The code below will execute once the onload event fires. The statement checks if the onetime function has NOT been executed before by making use of a flag (hasCodeRunBefore), which is then stored in localStorage.

Per #PatrickRoberts comment, you can use the in operator to see if a variable key exists in localStorage, so
if (localStorage.getItem('hasCodeRunBefore') === null)
becomes

and is less verbose and a lot cleaner.
Secondly, you can set values as you would an object (localStorage.hasCodeRunBefore = true) though it will be stored as a string, not as boolean (or whatever data type your value is).

All JavaScript must execute every time a page loads. If the script is on the page, it will execute.
The logic that is executed within the JavaScript included on the page may execute in a different manner depending on the page state, input provided, and any other signals it receives, be it from the server or the client.
If you're using a server side language, you might choose to render a script conditionally, such as the first time a user logs in.
If you need to include the javascript irrespective of context, then you need to listen to other signals.
The simple modern solution is to make use of localStorage. localStorage can be used to store custom string values on custom key values for any given domain.
The code to make use of this would look like:

That's all well and good if you just need things to work on the client alone. Sometimes you might need the server to know whether or not the page has been visited before.
The (less)simple solution is to use document.cookie:

If you need to defer the execution until the page has finished loading, then simply include the script in an onload callback, either by assigning the event to the window:

It depends on what first page load means to you. It's subjective.
If you want the function to fire once the DOM has been parsed, but only the HTML and no other external resources, bind it to the DOMContentLoaded event.
document.addEventListener('DOMContentLoaded', fn);
Otherwise, if you want to wait for external resources to be loaded and then fire the event, you should bind it to the window object's load event like so:
window.addEventListener('load', fn);

I was facing something similar, the difference in my case was, I wanted to run a code whenever a new instance was being created I needed a certain code to execute, and then later for the rest of the reloads that code should not execute.
For that similar to localStorage solutions above use session storage instead:

using the window.sessionStorage instead stores the value only for that session.
this way once the tab is closed (session is over, that value is wiped out) and on every new instantiation, the code is executed.
So I have a simple tab system which I handle with the .load function to load the desired content. The problem is that the page itself which contains this tab system is a ajax loaded content. And for some reason the initial call of the tab function to display the initial tab content won't work. But after manually choosing a tab, the load function loads the content properly.

Because the code by itself works, I think the problem is caused by the other script which handles the page itself. It is also a .load function which loads the page, which loads this tab system.
So do multiple .loads don't like each other? and if so, what can I change?

Big Update
So this is still the same issue but with a slight twist: I did what was recommended in the comments and put my secondary .load() call inside the success call of the first one.

So this works.
But now I had the great idea to make a giant load function. It is a slightly better function than just the plain load, cause it does some fading and stuff. But now I have the same problem, but even more complicated. I created the load function as a "plugin" so the function itself is in a different script file and therefore I can't access the inside of the success function. I solved this problem with a return $.ajax(); and a .done() call. The problem here is that there is some rare case where it just skips the secondary load function. So I am searching for a guaranteed way of controlling the order of the .load calls. Any idea?

We cannot see the rest of your code to tell where the initial call is being invoked from. A set up like the following should work:

The reason it does not work initial is because otab is not defined the first time the function is called. You have initialized otab at the end of the function but you are using it at the beginning of the function.

I have had a chance to look at your code and I just found out what the issues are:
You do not have DOM ready
You are not calling the function on page load.
The following version of your code should work -- try not to use global variable as you're doing with otab. Since you're loading this script at the end of the page (an you are using event delegation) you may get away with DOM ready. Adding .trigger('click') or click() as indicated below should resolve the issue.

A partial answer to this problem was to call the loadTab function inside the success call of the page load function, like charlietfl pointed out. But the problem is that there is no need to call the tabloader every time a new page gets called. So I would rather not have a rare call in every page setup function.
I am a bit disappointed by the system on stackoverflow. It seems like if you have not a high reputation level, no one gives a "S" about your questions. Well but at least some input was give, for which I am very thankful.
So by digging deeper into google I found out that the callback can be manually placed in the function where ever you like.
so if we have a function:

this does stuff after foo() is done. But what if we have another function inside foo() which we also need to wait for:

The bar function is not relevant to the success call of foo. This causes the unpredictable outcome of calls.
The trick is to control when the success function of foo gets called.
If we add a parameter(callback) inside foo and call this "parameter" (callback();) inside the success call of bar, we can make sure the order is guaranteed.
And that's it:

To see the problem in action, see this jsbin. Clicking on the button triggers the buttonHandler(), which looks like this:

You would expect that this code changes the text of the div to "thinking", and then runs longPrimeCalc(), an arithmetic function that takes a few seconds to complete. However, this is not what happens. Instead, "longPrimeCalc" completes first, and then the text is updated to "thinking" after it's done running, as if the order of the two lines of code were reversed.
It appears that the browser does not run "innerHTML" code synchronously, but instead creates a new thread for it that executes at its own leisure.
My questions:
What is happening under the hood that is leading to this behavior?
How can I get the browser to behave the way I would expect, that is, force it to update the "innerHTML" before it executes "longPrimeCalc()"?
I tested this in the latest version of chrome.
Your surmise is incorrect. The .innerHTML update does complete synchronously (and the browser most definitely does not create a new thread). The browser simply does not bother to update the window until your code is finished. If you were to interrogate the DOM in some way that required the view to be updated, then the browser would have no choice.
For example, right after you set the innerHTML, add this line:

edit — I might figure out a way to trick the browser, or it might be impossible; it's certainly true that launching your long computation in a separate event loop will make it work:
setTimeout(longPrimeCalc, 10); // not 0, at least not with Firefox!
A good lesson here is that browsers try hard not to do pointless re-flows of the page layout. If your code had gone off on a prime number vacation and then come back and updated the innerHTML again, the browser would have saved some pointless work. Even if it's not painting an updated layout, browsers still have to figure out what's happened to the DOM in order to provide consistent answers when things like element sizes and positions are interrogated.
I think the way it works is that the currently running code completes first, then all the page updates are done. In this case, calling longPrimeCalc causes more code to be executed, and only when it is done does the page update change.
To fix this you have to have the currently running code terminate, then start the calculation in another context. You can do that with setTimeout. I'm not sure if there's any other way besides that.
Here is a jsfiddle showing the behavior. You don't have to pass a callback to longPrimeCalc, you just have to create another function which does what you want with the return value. Essentially you want to defer the calculation to another "thread" of execution. Writing the code this way makes it obvious what you're doing (Updated again to make it potentially nicer):

when i test this code in firefox, the locateMe function is called every two seconds and works as expected. when i test the code in IE8 the function is never called (at least it appears to never be called from what i can see using IE's developer tools)
note: there is code defined in a click event handler for the 'zone_row' class that modifies locID. again, in firefox everything works as expected. the strange thing is, in IE when a zone_row is clicked the function WILL be called ONCE. i can see that both on the developer tools and through the result of the action of that jquery post.
i figured there is just some anomly with IE that i am not familiar with yet. what am i doing wrong?

i also tried wrapping the call in a setTimeout (no effect) and changing the DOCTYPE (this actually caused IE to never call the function as opposed to now where it calls it ONCE and never again).
problem solved. i found an answer to another problem i was having from this post:

upon adding $.ajaxSetup({ cache: false }); to my document ready function, it solved THIS problem too. it looks like all this time it was a caching issue.
I've found that for IE (even IE9) that if you nest the self-called function in an anonymous function it works. But it does look like Toddeman's problem was related to the ajax part.

I am having trouble with some JavaScript running before the page is completely rendered in IE 6 (maybe other versions too but just testing IE6 for now. Firefox seems to be OK). I can get around this by calling the js on window.onload like this:
window.onload = function(){doIt();}
However, my concern is the fact that I will overwrite anything else that may already be in window.onload. The code will be used as part of a library so I can not guarantee that window.onload will not be set somewhere else by someone else. I would rather append my function to the onload event like this:
window.onload += function(){doIt1();}
window.onload += function(){doIt2();}
But when I do so, only doit2() is called. Is there a way to register an event handler for when the page is fully rendered? My second thought would be to just put my code in a loop checking to make sure all my objects exist before running. But I am scared that this could potentially lockup the browser.
Just for some background info, my code is hiding/showing iFrames. I know that I can use the iFrame's onload attribute but I need all of the iFrames to be fully loaded before calling the code.
Any thoughts from the community? Thanks in advance for you input.

This essentially queues up functions to be executed. It never overwrites a previously assigned handler. Sample usage below...
