JavaScript check if string contains any of the words from regex - javascript

I'm trying to check if a string contains any of these words:
AB|AG|AS|Ltd|KB|University
My current code:
var acceptedwords = '/AB|AG|AS|Ltd|KB|University/g'
var str = 'Hello AB';
var matchAccepted = str.match(acceptedwords);
console.log(matchAccepted);
if (matchAccepted !== null) { // Contains the accepted word
console.log("Contains accepted word: " + str);
} else {
console.log("Does not contain accepted word: " + str);
}
But for some strange reason this does not match.
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

That's not the right way to define a literal regular expression in Javascript.
Change
var acceptedwords = '/AB|AG|AS|Ltd|KB|University/g'
to
var acceptedwords = /AB|AG|AS|Ltd|KB|University/;
You might notice I removed the g flag : it's useless as you only want to know if there's one match, you don't want to get them all. You don't even have to use match here, you could use test :
var str = 'Hello AB';
if (/AB|AG|AS|Ltd|KB|University/.test(str)) { // Contains the accepted word
console.log("Contains accepted word: " + str);
} else {
console.log("Does not contain accepted word: " + str);
}
If you want to build a regex with strings, assuming none of them contains any special character, you could do
var words = ['AB','AG', ...
var regex = new RegExp(words.join('|'));
If your names may contain special characters, you'll have to use a function to escape them.
If you want your words to not be parts of other words (meaning you don't want to match "ABC") then you should check for words boundaries :
regex = new RegExp(words.map(function(w){ return '\\b'+w+'\\b' }).join('|'),'g');

Recombine capture groups in single regexp?

I am trying to handle input groups similar to:
'...A.B.' and want to output '.....AB'.
Another example:
'.C..Z..B.' ==> '......CZB'
I have been working with the following:
'...A.B.'.replace(/(\.*)([A-Z]*)/g, "$1")
returns:
"....."
and
'...A.B.'.replace(/(\.*)([A-Z]*)/g, "$2")
returns:
"AB"
but
'...A.B.'.replace(/(\.*)([A-Z]*)/g, "$1$2")
returns
"...A.B."
Is there a way to return
"....AB"
with a single regexp?
I have only been able to accomplish this with:
'...A.B.'.replace(/(\.*)([A-Z]*)/g, "$1") + '...A.B.'.replace(/(\.*)([A-Z]*)/g, "$2")
==> ".....AB"
If the goal is to move all of the . to the beginning and all of the A-Z to the end, then I believe the answer to

Separately, I don't think there's a simpler, more efficient way than two replace calls — but not the two you've shown. Instead:
var str = "...A..B...C.";
var result = str.replace(/[A-Z]/g, "") + str.replace(/\./g, "");

(I don't know what you want to do with non-., non-A-Z characters, so I've ignored them.)
If you really want to do it with a single call to replace (e.g., a single pass through the string matters), you can, but I'm fairly sure you'd have to use the function callback and state variables:
var str = "...A..B...C.";

var nondots = "";
var result = str.replace(/\.|[A-Z]|$/g, function(m) {

Regex match cookie value and remove hyphens

I'm trying to extract out a group of words from a larger string/cookie that are separated by hyphens. I would like to replace the hyphens with a space and set to a variable. Javascript or jQuery.
As an example, the larger string has a name and value like this within it:
facility=34222%7CConner-Department-Store;
(notice the leading "C")
So first, I need to match()/find facility=34222%7CConner-Department-Store; with regex. Then break it down to "Conner Department Store"

If I understood it correctly, you want to make a phrase by getting all the words between hyphens and disallowing two successive Uppercase letters in a word, so I'd prefer using Regex in that case.
This is a Regex solution, that works dynamically with any cookies in the same format and extract the wanted sentence from it:
var matches = str.match(/([A-Z][a-z]+)-?/g);
console.log(matches.map(function(m) {

Explanation:
Use this Regex (/([A-Z][a-z]+)-?/g to match the words between -.
Replace any - occurence in the matched words.
Then just join these matches array with white space.

first, you should decode this string as follows:

var decoded = decodeURIComponent(str);

Then you have multiple possibilities to split up this string.
The easiest way is to use substring()
var solution1 = decoded.substring(decoded.indexOf('|') + 1, decoded.length)
// solution1 = "Conner-Department-Store;"
solution1 = solution1.replace('-', ' ');
// solution1 = "Conner Department Store;"
As you can see, substring(arg1, arg2) returns the string, starting at index arg1 and ending at index arg2. See Full Documentation here
If you want to cut the last ; just set decoded.length - 1 as arg2 in the snippet above.
decoded.substring(decoded.indexOf('|') + 1, decoded.length - 1)
//returns "Conner-Department-Store"
or all above in just one line:
decoded.substring(decoded.indexOf('|') + 1, decoded.length - 1).replace('-', ' ')
If you want still to use a regular Expression to retrieve (perhaps more) data out of the string, you could use something similar to this snippet:

facility can be any Word built with alphabetical characters lower and uppercase (no other chars) at any length
= needs to be the char =
34222 can be any number but no other characters
| needs to be the char |
Conner-Department-Store can be any characters except one of the following (reserved delimiters): :/?#[]#;,'

Splitting string to array while ignoring content between apostrophes

I need something that takes a string, and divides it into an array.
I want to split it after every space, so that this -
"Hello everybody!" turns into ---> ["Hello", "Everybody!"]
However, I want it to ignore spaces inbetween apostrophes. So for examples -
"How 'are you' today?" turns into ---> ["How", "'are you'", "today?"]
Now I wrote the following code (which works), but something tells me that what I did is pretty much horrible and that it can be done with probably 50% less code.
I'm also pretty new to JS so I guess I still don't adhere to all the idioms of the language.

Well I just found a few problems, some of which I fixed, and some I'm not sure how to handle without making this code too complex (for example the string "hello 'every body'!" doesn't split properly....)
You could try matching instead of splitting:
string.match(/(?:['"].+?['"])|\S+/g)
The above regex will match anything in between quotes (including the quotes), or anything that's not a space otherwise.
If you want to also match characters after the quotes, like ? and ! you can try:
/(?:['"].+?['"]\W?)|\S+/g
For "hello 'every body'!" it will give you this array:
["hello", "'every body'!"]
Note that \W matches space as well, if you want to match punctuation you could be explicit by using a character class in place of \W
[,.?!]
Or simply trim the strings after matching:
string.match(regex).map(function(x){return x.trim()})

Extract string when preceding number or combo of preceding characters is unknown

Here's an example string:
++++#foo+bar+baz++#yikes
I need to extract foo and only foo from there or a similar scenario.
The + and the # are the only characters I need to worry about.
However, regardless of what precedes foo, it needs to be stripped or ignored. Everything else after it needs to as well.
try this:
/\++#(\w+)/
and catch the capturing group one.
You can simply use the match() method.
var str = "++++#foo+bar+baz++#yikes";
var res = str.match(/\w+/g);
console.log(res[0]); // foo
console.log(res); // foo,bar,baz,yikes
Or use exec
var str = "++++#foo+bar+baz++#yikes";

Using exec with a g modifier (global) is meant to be used in a loop getting all sub matches.

How exactly do + and # play a role in identifying foo? If you just want any string that follows # and is terminated by + that's as simple as:

To help you more specifically, please provide information about the possible variations of your data and how you would go about identifying the token you want to extract even in cases of differing lengths and characters.
If you are just looking for the first segment of text preceded and followed by any combination of + and #, then use:
var foostring = '++++#foo+bar+baz++#yikes';
var result = foostring.match(/[^+#]+/);
// will be the single-element array, ['foo'], or null.
Depending on your data, using \w may be too restrictive as it is equivalent to [a-zA-z0-9_]. Does your data have anything else such as punctuation, dashes, parentheses, or any other characters that you do want to include in the match? Using the negated character class I suggest will catch every token that does not contain a + or a #.

Live replacement for regular expressions with Javascript

I'm writing a code for live replacement of specific words in a text field as the user types.
I'm using regex and javascript:
The first array has the regular expressions to be found, and the second array has the words that should replace any them.

My problem is every time the function is called to replace an expression with only one letter, the replacement is being made on the first occurrence of that letter, even within a word. I thought looking for that letter with \s before and after would solve it, but it didn't.
If you're looking only to match a word, you should put \b before and after (word boundary). This will ensure that you don't match parts of words. Also note that you are corrupting your regex by concatenating a string. Try this instead:

You need to add a g (global) modified to regexes so that it will replace all occurrences and use \b instead of \s to mark word boundaries.

On a side note, since all your regexes follow the same pattern it might be easier to just do:
source = new Array( 'rsr', 'ñ', 'naum', etc );
if( myregex = newtext.match( new Regexp( "\b"+source[i]+"\b", 'g' ) ) ) {

If by "live replacement" you mean calling function replacement at each keystroke then \b at the end will not help you, you should indeed use \s. However in your replacement function your are adding a space to the text field value so your single character words are triggering the replacement.
