How to programmatically determine name of CKEditor instance - javascript

I've added a CKEditor instance programmatically to my page in the code-behind of my ASP.NET page:
VB.NET:
itemEditor = New CkEditor
cell.Controls.Add(itemEditor)
... which works fine. I can get the HTML on the postback and do stuff with it.
However, I also want to do some client-side stuff with it, specifically take a selected item out of another control, and insert it into the text by handling the onchange event.
So, how can I get the name of the editor instance in the JavaScript, so that I can do stuff like:

Here is another way of defining the CKEditor. Here 'fck' is the input fields id:

Notice how I am then able to reference the instance using .fck.

If you only have a single instance and you do not know the name of it.
CKEDITOR.instances[Object.keys(CKEDITOR.instances)[0]].getData()

The following code:

for ( var i in allInstances ){
alert(allInstances[i].name);
}
works fine for me.

Well I've found a way... but I don't like it much...
I've added a Hidden Field control to the page, after adding the editor, and put the editor's ClientId in its value:

.Value = itemEditor.ClientID

cell.Controls.Add(hdn)
.. and then in the JavaScript, I can get the hidden field, and hence the editor name as follows:

But it's a bit inelegant, to say the least. Anyone got a better way?

If you are using CKEDITOR.appendTo(...), keep in mind that the ckeditor does create an instance name internally. So you can query for that name immediately after creating it, then store it somewhere, and use it later.
var lvo_editor = CKEDITOR.appendTo( "my_div" , null , lvs_html ) ;
my_global_var = lvo_editor.name ;
by the way: The CKEDITOR.replace(...) method allows you to define an instance name (see answer above)

If you need the instance from a plugin, at least in version 4+ you can do this.
CKEDITOR.currentInstance

How to access the TYPO3 settings in JavaScript

In my project we're using TYPO3. We're getting some data from the backend and they're assigned as follows in the html page itself.

items.item2 = {settings.item2};

and then the values are being assigned to the buttons. Those values will be sent back to the JS when an action has triggered. The {settings.item*} comes from the TYPO3 backend. What I wanted to know is how can I add the above code block in a separate JS file rather than adding it in the HTML page. When I tried adding it directly, it doesn't work as the {settings.item*} comes from TYPO3

You have to pick up your settings from the HTML since this is what TYPO3 will render for you. but you could rather make use of the data-attributes of HTML, e.g.
You could also render the whole {settings} array as a JSON string into a data-attribute and pick that up with your JavaScript.

Can you define the context more precisely? Where are the settings defined, inside of TypoScript, Flexform, PHP (Extensionmanager)?
If you have settings defined in TypoScript you can use:
page.inlineSettings {

To make them available in JavaScript as:

Perhaps this will be removed in future versions as it's purpose is usage via ExtJS. Also it's not possible to use stdWrap and such.
Another, more flexible, way is using
page.jsInline {

This allows you to use full TypoScript like TEXT, dataWrap, etc.

I wouldn't write JavaScript from PHP just for some configuration. I would store them in data-attributes of a DOM element and grab it via JavaScript. Maybe this is also an option for you.

JavaScript to set field in Lotus Notes Web Form

I am trying to have a Wscript agent run when the web form starts in order to set a field with the machine name. I have tried adding this as pass through HTML at the bottom of the form as well as adding it to the onLoad event or the JS Header to no avail. I am a beginner at web enabling a form and adding JavaScript to it in Lotus. Any help would be fantastic. Below is the code:

In the onload- event of the form, this code should work:

How to access files attribute of a file element using JavaScript

I have in my form an input element with type of file. What I like to do is to check the file size before the element is uploaded for validation issue. By using the majority of primary Web Browsers (except IE that always does things harder), I have find out that all are using an "attribute" that updated whenever I choose a new file and display the file size, as well other usefull information.
Here is what I see in Chrome web browser :
The question now is, how can I access that value with JavaScript ? I have try several ways, but none was good for me ? Any good idea please ?
NOTE: In my web site I use jQuery, so is not important to be only regular JavaScript the answer.

Pass a Simple URL Variable into and Input Field via Javascript

I have found plenty of ways to do this via PHP but on a simple HTML site I have run into a roadblock. And I'm not really strong on JS so that doesn't help.
Basically I am passing a very simple URL variable (a ref #) via a link (...com/Apply-Online?12345) and I need to load it into an input text field on a form in the linked page. Most of the scripts I have found want to parse out multiple variables and it gets really complicated in a hurry. Since I only have 1 value it seems like there should be an easy way to parse the variable from the URL and pass it into a var and pass that to the ID of the field.
I have the window.onload part figured out. I just need the code to parse out the variable.

Passing parameters to JavaScript files

Often I will have a JavaScript file that I want to use which requires certain variables be defined in my web page.
So the code is something like this:

But what I want to do is:

I tried different methods and the best one yet is to parse the query string like this:
var scriptSrc = document.getElementById("myscript").src.toLowerCase();
And then search for my values.
I wonder if there is another way to do this without building a function to parse my string.
Do you all know other methods?
I'd recommend not using global variables if possible. Use a namespace and OOP to pass your arguments through to an object.

You can pass parameters with arbitrary attributes. This works in all recent browsers.

Another idea I came across was assigning an id to the <script> element and passing the arguments as data-* attributes. The resulting <script> tag would look something like this:

The script could then use the id to programmatically locate itself and parse the arguments. Given the previous <script> tag, the name could be retrieved like this:
var name = document.getElementById("helper").getAttribute("data-name");
We get name = helper

Here is a very rushed proof of concept.
I'm sure there are at least 2 places where there can be improvements, and I'm also sure that this would not survive long in the wild. Any feedback to make it more presentable or usable is welcome.
The key is setting an id for your script element. The only catch is that this means you can only call the script once since it looks for that ID to pull the query string. This could be fixed if, instead, the script loops through all query elements to see if any of them point to it, and if so, uses the last instance of such an script element. Anyway, on with the code:

The same process can be done without any framework but will take some more lines of code.
Well, you could have the javascript file being built by any of the scripting languages, injecting your variables into the file on every request. You would have to tell your webserver to not dish out js-files statically (using mod_rewrite would suffice).
Be aware though that you lose any caching of these js-files as they are altered constantly.

Nice question and creative answers but my suggetion is to make your methods paramterized and that should solve all your problems without any tricks.

I think this is most natural approach, you don't need to crate extra documentation about 'file parameters' and you receive the same. This specially useful if you allow other developers to use your js file.
It's not valid html (I don't think) but it seems to work if you create a custom attribute for the script tag in your webpage:

Then access the custom attribute in the javascript:

Here i have found an another way of doing this same thing. In the reuired js file [cttricks.js as i have used it for testing, you can have your any .js file], we'll simply list up all script elements and get the required one as it is always going to be at last index. And then get ".attributes.src.value" from that.
Now, in any case of script call, it is

No, you cant really do this by adding variables to the querystring portion of the JS file URL. If its writing the portion of code to parse the string that bothers you, perhaps another way would be to json encode your variables and put them in something like the rel attribute of the tag? I don't know how valid this is in terms of HTML validation, if thats something you're very worried about. Then you just need to find the rel attribute of the script and then json_decode that.
eg

Although this question has been asked a while ago, it is still relevant as of today. This is not a trivial approach using script file params, but I already had some extreme use-cases that this way was most suited.
I came across this post to find out a better solution than I wrote a while ago, with hope to find maybe a native feature or something similar.
I will share my solution, up until a better one will be implemented. This works on most modern browsers, maybe even on older ones, didn't try.
All the solutions above, are based on the fact that it has to be injected with predefined and well marked SCRIPT tag and rely completely on the HTML implementation. But, what if the script is injected dynamically, or even worse, what if you are write a library, that will be used in a variety of websites?
In these and some other cases, all the above answers are not sufficient and even becoming too complicated.
First, let's try to understand what do we need to achieve here. All we need to do is to get the URL of the script itself, from there it's a piece of cake.
There is actually a nice trick to get the script URL from the script itself. One of the functionalities of the native Error class, is the ability to provide a stack trace of the "problematic location", including the exact file trace to the last call. In order to achieve this, I will use the stack property of the Error instance, that once created, will give the full stack trace.
Here is how the magic works:

I think it is far more better and modern solution to just use localStorage on the page where the javascript is included and then just re-use it inside the javascript itself. Set it in localStorage with:

and refer to it inside javascript file like:
localStorage.getItem("nameOfVariable");
It's possible to pass parameters to js modules and read them after via import.meta.url.
For example, with the following HTML
