Cost of implementing local scope by default - javascript

As we all know, in some languages (the most known example is javascript) variables are global scoped by default. That means that if one wants to declare local variable, he should write var, local, my or whatever.
I'd never thought about the implementation costs of this, but it turns out that it could be not just a matter of traditions. For example, check this link. My question is - is local scope-by-default architecture beforehand more pricey than global-scope-by-default. Just kinda of, don't know, selection sort beforehand requires less swaps than bubblesort, in that way "beforehand".
Besides, I would appreciate if somebody will edit this question to add appropriate tags. I just don't know which one fits better here.

At compile time, the costs of local-by-default and global-by-default are the same. You still have to completely traverse the list of all active local variables when you find a name that hasn't been seen yet. At run time, local variables are usually faster to access.

Is there any reason for "saving" variables?

I've got this function a colleague once has written:
setSentence: function (e) {
this.setState({
issueText: e.target.value
});
if (this.refs.messages.textContent.length > 0 && e.target.value.length > 2) {
this.refs.messages.textContent = '';

He uses e.target.value on two places within the code. I would tend to make something like this:
let textBoxContent = e.target.value;
Then use the variable with the more descriptive name instead.
I once talked to him about these avoiding variables-thing. He just said that he wants "to save variables".
Would like to change these code-pieces but I'm still not sure ...
So therefore my question:
Does "saving variables" respectively avoiding variables in the code make any sense?
There is no economy in "saving variables" while repeating verbose code over and over. To me, this definitely falls in the category of DRY (Don't Repeat Yourself).
Javascript interpreters are very optimized for fast access to local variables. When a variable is being referenced, the very first scope that is looked in is the local scope so it will be found immediately and because of that and because there is no outside access to local variables, code within the function using them can be optimized pretty well.
In the end, it's probably as much a personal coding preference as anything.
My personal rule is that if I have some multi-step reference such as e.target.value and I'm using it more than once in a function, then I will creating a meaningfully named local variable and assign it to that so I can then just use the local variable in the multiple places and avoid repeating the same multi-step property reference over and over (a textbook example of DRY).
This definitely makes the code easier to read too, both because you have a meaningful variable name and because it's just a simple variable rather than a multi-step property reference that has a generic name. While, it might technically be one additional line of code for the local variable assignment, it saves a lot of repeated property lookups so the theory is that it should be faster to save the end value into textBoxContent and not have to have the interpreter lookup e.target.value every time.
Also, you should never fall for people who want to micro-optimize regular code as they first write it. Optimizations like this generally only need apply to 0.000001% of all your code and only after you've proven exactly where your bottleneck for performance is. And, even then you will have to devise multiple benchmarks in your target environment to prove what actually makes things faster (not use one person opinion - measurements only).
Before that, all your code should first be correct, clear, readable, maintainable, extensible, DRY, appropriate performance and about 10 other priorities before anyone thinks about a micro-optimization. If you apply the above priorities to the case you asked about, you will always decide to assign e.target.value to a local variable if you are referencing it more than once within a context.

Why am I finding Javascript/jQuery so difficult to get right?

My background is in C and I've picked up PHP, mySQL, HTML, CSS without too much issue.
But I'm finding Javascript/jQuery surprisingly difficult to get right.
Very frustrating.
Why?
It seems to violate a number of traditional programming principles (e.g. variable scope)
Undefined variables seem to appear out of nowhere and already have values associated with them. For example (from the jQuery docs):

What exactly is "event"? Do I have to use this variable name? Should I just assume that this object is magically instantiated with the right stuff and I can use any of the methods list at the JQuery API?
There seems to be bunch of random rules (e.g. return false to stop a default action, but sometimes this doesn't work?)
Non-deterministic behavior when debugging. (e.g. I refresh the browser, try something and get result X for JS variables I'm watching in Firebug. I refresh again and I get result Y?)
Very messy looking code that is hard to follow. What happens when? I'm using Firebug and Chrome Developer Tools, but I'm not getting enough visibility.
It seems like everyday there's some random JS "rule" that comes up that I've never seen before in any of my JS books or tutorials.
What do I need to do to make Javascript/jQuery more deterministic, controlled, and logical to me?
Are there any resources that explain Javascript's quirks/gotchas?

You need to declare variables using var, else it will go into the global scope.

You need to let the handler return false as well. E.g. form onsubmit="return functionname()". You also need to return from the "main" function, not only from a closure (a function inside a function), referring to your previous question. It would only return into the "main" function and continue on.
4) Non-deterministic behavior when debugging. (e.g. I refresh the browser, try something and get result X for JS variables I'm watching in Firebug. I refresh again and I get result Y?)
Probably the code was executed before the HTML DOM was finished populating. You need to hook on window.onload or $(document).ready() whenever you want to execute stuff during page load.

I bet that you're talking about jQuery source? It's just a large library. You should after all not worry about this when debugging. Rather worry about your own code. However, make sure that you're looking at the unminified version of jQuery's source code.

Douglas Crockford's "Javascript: The Good Parts" was an invaluable resource. Javascript plays a lot more like Lua, Lisp, or Python than C, it just happens to LOOK like C.

To be honest, I think you have a good understanding. Some of my hangups were similar. The way that I have been moving on is "well, if that's the way it is, then that's the way it is". Just accept the idiosyncrasies and plow forward. PHP does some of the same things (variables can show up out of nowhere, etc...). Just code the way you want to code and if it works, then great!
Then after you get to that point start breaking out the profiler and see if there's anything that you can optimize.
Here are a couple of things:
If you understand CSS, then jQuery selectors should be easy. As far as the code goes, that's straightforward too if you can deal with chaining and JSON. EDIT: also, the jQuery documentation on everything is EXCELLENT! And There is no shortage of jQuery experts here on SO to help us noobs (and hopefully we can return the favor for newer noobs).
There is a scope to work with. (Basically) anything written outside of a function or object is in global scope. If you are inside of an object or function and use var then that sets the variable's scope
Javascript isn't like a C-based language (C++ or PHP even). It uses prototypes to deal with class/object relationships rather than a subclassing scheme.
The #1 thing that threw me for a loop is that any JS that appears anywhere on the page or that was included in <script> tags is fair game. If you have a global variable in one script, you can use that same variable in a completely different script and it will work. That may be what you mean about variables showing up out of nowhere. Also, there are some DOM based variables that can just "show up" too.
Anyways, I think that if you just plow ahead, you'll get some "AHA" moments. I'm a relative noob to programming, but I continually grow as long as I don't hang up on something that doesn't have too much of an impact on actually making the code run.
It's a language based on prototypal inheritance and is influenced by functional programming languages and the paradigm so it isn't completely just OO/Procedural like other languages. Variables are implied globals unless declared with var.

return false exits out of the function as with any language's return statement. preventDefault() would be the DOM method to cancel the default behaviour of a link
Javascript is used primarily on the client side. Since there are many user agents, each of them have a different implementation of the DOM, which is very inconsistent, moreso than JS itself. Again, please include a real example to get a definitive answer.
You'll find messy looking code in any language, and maybe your lack of understanding perceives the code as messy, when in fact it isn't so bad. Or maybe you're looking at some minified/obfuscated code.

Crockford's "Javascript: The Good Parts" gives some common JS patterns that help with variable privatization and scoping. This is for javascript in general. For jQuery I just use the API. Also the Yui Theatre videos on javascript are quite good
Javascript can be a little tricky and some of it's functional aspects confuses people. If you actually learn and understand the language you'll find it really useful, most people just randomly start using it and then just hate.

Also make sure you understand closure. It's a fundamental that people don't get but often use.
In terms of variable scope, there are local and global variables. One of the gotchyas of variable scope can be seen in this example:

You are finding it difficult because:
javascript has another kind of syntax.
javascript is dificult to debug
javascript has no autocompletion like c# etc) ?or does it
javascript has illogical rules (they become logical once you are known with them)
everything can be done in 1000 ways, and when you search for a solution, you will find 2000 answers :) where c#, php mostly have a good practice function u "should/could" use
However, I started using js/jquery a half year ago, with the same reasoning as you do, and I stuck to it, and now I use it daily to enhance my webapps.
I just love it (especcially jquery). It is a life saver, I know what and where to look, I can do about anything with it.
Everything seems logical.
If I can give you one advice: javascript/jquery is a sour apple, but just hang in there, bit trough and you won't regret it.
also, a loooot of people use it and are always willing to lend a hand if needed (I know I do)
Javascript is tricky. You don't have a compiler watching your back. To compensate, unit testing becomes more important. I've been doing my unit testing with jQuery/QUnit, but I recently started using Jasmine (http://github.com/pivotal/jasmine) and I recommend it 200%. Its a great testing framework.
If you're not familiar with testing, or testing with javascript, I'd highly recommend finding unit tests for other OSS javascript projects (hopefully for code you could use) and seeing how they test it.
With unit tests, you'll make the same mistakes, but catch them much sooner and with less grief. And if your tests are good, the mistakes won't come back after you fix tham.
I don't know how much UI design you have done in C, but the event variable only shows up when it is sent by the caller and the handler needs to, well, handle the object. If you do reading on event object, the confusion in q #2 should go away.
There is no event handling in PHP, so I think you have not came across this issue in the past. JavaScript is a programming language with its own purpose, so it was designed to work for that specific purpose.
Maybe you have to link your code to an HTML onclick="event()" button to fire off as the event.

Javascript optimization...global variables

I am making a webapp. I have a fairly basic question about javascript performance. Sometimes I need a global variable to store information that is used the entire time the website is open.
An example is a variable called needs_saved. It is true or false to say whether the page needs saved. I might have another variable called is_ie, ie_version, or space_remaining.
These are all variable that I need in various functions throughout the app.
Now, I know global variables are bad because they require the browser to search each level of function scope. But, I don't know if there is any better way to store values that are needed throughout the program.
I know I could create a global object called 'program_status' and give it the properties is_ie, ie_version, etc... But is this any better since it would first have to find my program_status object (stored as a global variable), and then the internal property?
Maybe I'm overthinking this.

You have nothing to worry about.
The performance impact of a global variable is minute.
Global variables are discouraged because they can make code harder to maintain.
In your case, they won't.
The reason global variable use should be kept to a minimum is because the global namespace gets polluted when there's a lot of them, and there's a good chance of a clash if your program needs to use some 3rd party libraries which also create their own globals.
Creating a single object to hold all of your global state is a good idea since it limits the number of identifiers you need to reserve at the global level.
To solve performance problems, you can then create a local reference to that object in any scope where you need to access it multiple times:
So instead of
if (globalState.isIe) { alert(globalState.ieMessage); }
you can do
var state = globalState;
if (state.isIe) { alert(state.ieMessage); }
You don't need to do this if you only access the state object once. In any case, even if you never do this, the performance penalties will be negligible.
If you're worried about performance, code something clean then run a profiler on it to optimize. I know both Safari and Google Chrome have one, and it's pretty sure Firebugs includes one for Firefox too. Heck, even Internet Explorer 8 has one.

Why is it bad to make elements global variables in Javascript?

I've heard that it's not a good idea to make elements global in JavaScript. I don't understand why. Is it something IE can't handle?
For example:
div = getElementById('topbar');
I don't think that's an implementation issue, but more a good vs bad practice issue. Usually global * is bad practice and should be avoided (global variables and so on) since you never really know how the scope of the project will evolve and how your file will be included.
I'm not a big JS freak so I won't be able to give you the specifics on exactly why JS events are bad but Christian Heilmann talks about JS best practices here, you could take a look. Also try googling "JS best practices"

Is it something IE can't handle?
No it is not an IE thing. You can never assume that your code will be the only script used in the document. So it is important that you make sure your code does not have global function or variable names that other scripts can override.
Refer to Play Well With Others for examples.
I assume by "events" you mean the event-handling JavaScript (functions).
In general, it's bad to use more than one global variable in JS. (It's impossible not to use at least one if you're storing any data for future use.) That's because it runs into the same problem as all namespacing tries to solve - what if you wrote a method doSomething() and someone else wrote a method called doSomething()?
The best way to get around this is to make a global variable that is an object to hold all of your data and functions. For example:
var MyStuff = {};
MyStuff.counter = 0;
MyStuff.eventHandler = function() { ... };
MyStuff.doSomething = function() { ... };
// Later, when you want to call doSomething()...
MyStuff.doSomething();
This way, you're minimally polluting the global namespace; you only need worry that someone else uses your global variable.
Of course, none of this is a problem if your code will never play with anyone else's... but this sort of thinking will bite you in the ass later if you ever do end up using someone else's code. As long as everyone plays nice in terms of JS global names, all code can get along.
There shouldn't be any problem using global variables in your code as long as you are wrapping them inside a uniqe namespase/object (to avoid collision with scripts that are not yours)
the main adventage of using global variable in javascript derives from the fact that javascript is not a strong type language. there for, if you pass somes complex objects as arguments to a function, you will probebly lose all the intellisence for those objects (inside the function scope.)
while using global objects insteads, will preserve that intellisence.
I personally find that very usfull and it certainly have place in my code.
(of course, one should alwayse make the right balance between locales and globals variables)

Why isn't it a must to declare a variable in Javascript before using it?

In Javascript we don't have to declare a variable with var keyword before using it. We can straight away do things like myCount = 12; or myStr = "Hello"; (where myCount, myStr are not declared before). Any such usage, declares and initializes the variables in the 'global' scope.
What could be the reasons for providing this feature? And is it a good standard at all?
UPDATE: My question is not what the differences are between 'using a variable without declaring' and 'declaring and then using' and how it affects scope.
My question is 'why it is allowed in javascript to use a variable directly without declaring it' as most of the programming languages have a strict check on this.
UPDATE : I see the following quoted text as a bad effect of this feature. So, why have this feature at all?

Javascript was intended for very simple scripts in the browser. Requiring variable declarations seemed unnecessary.
Of course, it's an error in the language. And the makers of javascript know that. They wanted to change it. But they couldn't. Why?
Because Microsoft had already reverse engineered JavaScript and created their duplicate JScript, with bugs and all. Microsoft vetoed any changes, even bugfixes, since they were adamant about not breaking anyones scripts. So even if they changed JavaScript, JScript in IE would stay the same.
It's not a good reason. But it's the one we have.

Good reasons? Honestly can't think of one, it's one of the few things I really dislike about JS.
It's possible because everything happens within the global scope if not otherwise controlled and JS allows implicit variable creation like this. The cost of this is enormous potential for scoping bugs and pollution, and only benefit given that "this" exists to explicitly define self scope and "window" and "document" exist for global referencing, is saving a few characters - which is no reason at all.

That's the difference between statically and dynamically typed languages. Javascript is dynamically typed, so there is no need to declare first. As it was pointed out in other answers, var keyword is more responsible for scope of a variable than its declaration.
And I don't think that most programming languages have a check on that.
Lua has a similar issue: any non-declared variable is global by default. In the mailing list it's a recurring theme, asking why shouldn't it be 'local by default'. unfortunately, that would introduce very nasty ambiguities in the language, so the conclusion typically is "global by default is bad, local by default is worse"
Because it is a scripting language. Fact kids. And that is how it was designed!
